The Big Bend Ultra

Start/Finish Barton Warnock Visitor Center, Lajitas, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Texas

The Big Bend 50 is a competitive trail run open to novice and professional athletes alike. The Big Bend Ultra offers chip-timed 10K, 30K and 50K marked distances for runners who want to take on the trails through BBRSP’s challenging topography and inspiring landscape. The event is usually held over Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend in January and benefits Compadres del Rancho Grande, the official friends group for Big Bend Ranch State Park. Aid stations are distributed at 5-mile distances throughout the course. Proceeds from the Ultra supports programs and projects in the parks ranging from interpretive publications, engaging programs and park infrastructure improvements. Additionally, Compadres del Rancho Grande has two main events every year:

River Clean Up: Second Weekend in November (Friday – Sunday)
Compadres del Rancho Grande and friends remove all species of trash from tributaries, roadways and riverbanks to prevent pollution in the Rio Grande. If the river is up and flowing  (100 cubic feet per second or more) we accomplish the mission by raft, canoe or other watercraft. If not, we get creative. Group camping at Madera Canyon campground.

Trail Blazers: Third Weekend in January (Friday – Sunday)
Compadres del Rancho Grande and associated friends of the trails in Big Bend Ranch State Park work on building new trails. In 2012, we completed approximately 3 miles of new trail connecting the Epic Loop by way of the Chimney Rock Cut Off.

For 2014-2015 Compadres are pitching in with the Big Bend Trails Alliance to improve trail infrastructure at the East Contrabando trail head and other locations throughout the park in preparation for upcoming events.
